Finger Lakes: il Riesling americano dei laghi glacialiFinger Lakes: the American Riesling of the glacial lakes

Eleven lakes carved by ice, a cold climate, and a grape that turns it into an asset.

In upstate New York, far from the ocean, eleven long, slender lakes trace one of the coldest wine regions in North America: the Finger Lakes, the “fingers” of water carved by glaciers. The grape most at home here is Riesling, which in the cool climate keeps a clean acidity and sharp aromatics — and has become the region's emblem grape.

The Finger Lakes owe their name to their shape: eleven long, tapering lakes running north to south across upstate New York. They were carved by the glaciers of the last Ice Age, which deepened old river valleys into very deep troughs. Seneca reaches a depth of nearly 190 metres; Cayuga is the longest. It is this huge body of water that changes everything. The best vineyards climb the slopes that fall toward the shore, where the lake's proximity and the exposure work together. The soils are largely shale and glacial deposits — poor, well drained, deep enough but no more: conditions that hold the vine in check and give taut, well-defined wines.

Perché qui il freddo non è un nemicoWhy the cold here is not an enemy

Without the lakes, European viticulture here would be all but impossible. The deep water stores summer heat and releases it slowly through autumn and winter: it blunts hard frosts, reduces spring frost damage and stretches the ripening season on the lake-facing slopes. It remains, even so, a region of real winters, with cold snaps that can damage the buds. That is why growers favour the more sheltered slopes and frost-hardy rootstocks: it is the combination of the lake effect and the right site that makes a delicate grape like Riesling possible. Here the cold is not endured but used, because it preserves acidity and aroma.

Konstantin Frank e la svolta della viniferaKonstantin Frank and the vinifera turning point

For much of the twentieth century the Finger Lakes lived on native American grapes (the “foxy”, wild-tasting Vitis labrusca) and hybrids: hardier and more resistant, but short on finesse. The turning point bears the name of Konstantin Frank, a viticulturist with a doctorate in viticulture from Odessa, who in Ukraine had rebuilt vineyards of Vitis vinifera grafted onto cold-resistant rootstocks. Having emigrated to the United States in 1951, in 1958 he got the European varieties to thrive on the shores of Keuka Lake, and in 1962 he founded Vinifera Wine Cellars. In 1979 Hermann Wiemer, a native of Bernkastel in the Mosel, brought the German Riesling tradition to the region and founded the winery that still bears his name. From there came the modern era of Finger Lakes wine, with Riesling as its signature grape.

Un Riesling tutto sull'aciditàA Riesling all about acidity

Finger Lakes Riesling has a recognisable signature: straw-yellow colour, a nose of citrus, apple and white peach; on the palate it is fresh and saline, with a straight acidity that invites the next sip and a salinity that lengthens the finish. With age the grape's own petrol note can appear: not a fault, but part of how Riesling evolves. What we call “minerality” is simply the name we give to that sense of tension and clarity — shale does not pass into the glass, but its good drainage and the poor soils push the vine toward lean, precise wines. Styles run from dry to sweet: many labels carry the International Riesling Foundation scale on the front, translating perceived sweetness into four steps — Dry, Medium Dry, Medium Sweet, Sweet — to which late-harvest wines and ice wines are added. Alongside Riesling, the cold of the lakes also suits Cabernet Franc, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay.

A tavolaAt the table

Dry Finger Lakes Riesling, fresh and saline, sits well with lake fish, oysters and sushi: the acidity cleans the palate of richer mouthfuls. The off-dry versions, with a touch of residual sugar, pair nicely with spiced cooking — a Thai curry, an Indian dish — where the gentle sweetness calms the heat. The sweeter wines and the ice wines, finally, close the meal over a fruit tart or pair with blue cheeses.
