Riccitelli: il Malbec d'altitudine di una piccola cantina di MendozaRiccitelli: the high-altitude Malbec of a small Mendoza winery

Ai piedi delle Ande, tra vecchie vigne a piede franco e quote da montagnaAt the foot of the Andes, among old ungrafted vines and mountain elevations

In Mendoza, Malbec is at home, but few wineries take the grape as high as the one Matías Riccitelli founded in 2009. The son of one of Argentina's best-known winemakers, he chose to build a name of his own: old vines in Las Compuertas, high-elevation plots in Gualtallary and a clear idea of Malbec — taut and fresh, far from jammy.

Matías's father is Jorge Riccitelli, long the winemaker at Bodega Norton. Growing up in the shadow of a name like that isn't easy, and Matías took the harder road. After years of experience around the world, rather than stay at his father's side he started a winery of his own in 2009, small and independent. One of his labels is called, fittingly, 'The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree': a fond tribute to the man who taught him the craft, but also a statement from someone set on going his own way. Today that name covers a whole range in the catalogue: under the same label the winery bottles a Malbec, an Argentine Bonarda, a Torrontés and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

The heart of the winery is in Las Compuertas, the highest band of Luján de Cuyo, at around 1,100 metres on stony soils. Here Riccitelli tends some twenty hectares of old ungrafted vines: across much of Mendoza phylloxera never took hold — thanks to the sandy soils and dry climate — so many vines still grow on their own roots, without rootstock. They yield little fruit but with great concentration, and it is from them that the most structured reds come. To these are added another twenty hectares higher up, in Gualtallary, in the Uco Valley, at around 1,400 metres, where viticulture turns mountainous: little soil, plenty of stones and limestone, sharp temperature swings. A house range, tellingly named 'Viñas Extremas', gathers the plots that climb past 1,500 metres: eight hectares in Los Chacayes and ten in San Pablo, again in the Uco Valley.

Cosa la montagna fa al MalbecWhat the mountains do to Malbec

Altitude works above all on temperature. High up, the days stay warm and bright, but the nights turn cold: the wide swing slows ripening and helps the grapes hold their acidity. The result is a fresher, more lifted Malbec, with dark fruit and often floral aromas, and tannins that are tight yet fine. It's the taut quality many call 'minerality'; worth remembering that it comes from the wine's acidity and balance, not from minerals travelling from the rock into the glass. The mountains act on the environment in which the vine grows — more light, cold nights, poor free-draining soils — not on the wine directly. It is the same mechanism behind high-altitude wines, in Argentina and elsewhere. This is the thread running through Riccitelli's reds: precision and freshness first, power second.

Una cantina piccola, molte ideeA small winery, many ideas

Riccitelli remains a family-sized project, yet curious and on the move. Since 2015 he has also been working on the banks of the Río Negro, in Patagonia, where he tends seventeen hectares planted in the 1950s and draws from them whites and reds made from almost-forgotten varieties, from Semillón to Bastardo. Between Mendoza and the south, the house catalogue today runs to some forty labels. It's a way of working that places the vineyard and its story ahead of volume, and that explains why the numbers here stay small by choice. In Italian online wine shops you'll find the house's 'Hey Malbec!', a Luján de Cuyo pure Malbec at around twenty-five euros: a good place to start before climbing in elevation.

At the table, high-altitude Malbec is at its best with classic Argentine cooking: asado and grilled red meats, where tannin and structure hold up to juicy meat straight off the grill, while the freshness of elevation clears the fat from the palate. It also works well with spiced beef empanadas or a medium-aged cheese.
