Arinto

Arinto is a white grape found almost everywhere in Portugal, from the Minho to the Alentejo, and it is recognised by one thing above all: its acidity. It stays lively even where the climate is hot, which is why many regions call it a «casta melhorante», a grape that improves blends. On its own it is at its best in Bucelas, just north of Lisbon, where the rules reserve at least three quarters of the wine for it. On the nose it is restrained, with green apple, lime and lemon; on the palate it is dry and taut, and with years in bottle it gains colour and depth.

Il carattereThe character

ColoreColour
Straw yellow, often with greenish glints when young. With bottle age it moves towards golden yellow, as the Bucelas specification describes.
NasoNose
Fairly intense and hardly exuberant: green apple, lime and lemon, sometimes orange and orange blossom, over a vegetal and mineral background. In particular vintages and places it can show a touch of passion fruit. Oak, where it is used, adds toasty notes.
BoccaPalate
Dry and fresh: acidity is its calling card and keeps it taut even in hot areas. Light to medium-bodied in young versions, fuller in those aged in oak; persistent, and more than one producer's sheet describes a savoury, almost saline finish.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Arinto is grown all over Portugal, but its recognised home is Bucelas, in the municipality of Loures, north of Lisbon. The appellation is small: the parish of Bucelas and part of those of Fanhões and Santo Antão do Tojal, on the slopes of the Trancão river valley. The specification describes a microclimate that is cold in winter and mild in summer, and poor soils derived from marl and hard limestone, the «caeiras» of local tradition.

Further north, in Vinho Verde, Arinto is found throughout the region and is also called Pedernã: the Vinho Verde commission lists it among the benchmark white grapes, for its citrus and its acid structure. Further south its role changes. In the Alentejo it is one of the principal white grapes of the appellation, and the regional commission calls it a grape that improves blends: it brings the acidity that the heat of the plain takes away. The same holds for the Tejo. In the Lisboa region, between the Serra de Montejunto and the coast, several estates bottle it on its own.

Bucelas DOP
Lisboa · Portogallo

Bucelas is the appellation built around Arinto: the wine must contain at least 75% of it, and the rest may come only from Sercial and Rabo de Ovelha. The area, whose wine has been legally recognised since 1907, lies in the Trancão valley, among hills that close it in and shelter it: cold winters, mild summers, poor soils of marl and limestone. The specification describes the result well: very light, acidic wines when young, fuller and more complex in scent with age, all the way to golden yellow. The appellation also provides for sparkling wine, and only by the traditional method, refermented in bottle from a base wine that already meets the Bucelas requirements. The Duke of Wellington, who passed through during the French invasions, came to know and appreciate the wine of Bucelas, which after the Peninsular War found favour at the English court.

Fermo, giovane, senza legnoStill, young, unoaked
Fermentazione a bassa temperatura in acciaio, o in cemento, e alcuni mesi sulle fecce fini. Low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel, or in concrete, and a few months on the fine lees. This is the version that shows the grape's citrus and tension, to drink in its first years.
Affinato in legnoOak-aged
Partly fermented or aged in oak barrels and vats, it gains volume and toasty notes. The Alentejo commission warns that oak suits it but costs it some of its staying power in bottle.
Spumante metodo classicoTraditional-method sparkling
Its high acidity makes it a natural base for sparkling wine. In Bucelas the appellation's sparkling wine is made only by the traditional method, with the second fermentation in bottle.
In uvaggioIn blends
In Vinho Verde and the Alentejo it often goes into blended whites alongside local grapes: there its job is to keep the wine fresh.

A tavolaAt the table

Portugal's wine promotion body pairs Arinto with shellfish, white fish, grilled dishes, white meats and salads. The list makes sense once you look at the wine: dry, fresh, with no overbearing fruit.

With fried squid or small fried fish you want a dry, taut, light-bodied white without oak: a young Arinto from Bucelas or the Lisboa region, though a Ligurian Vermentino or a Verdicchio do the same job. The acidity cleans the oil of the fry from the palate, and if the wine is sparkling the bubbles help even more. With grilled sea bream or sardines, lemon on the side, the same wine works. The oak-aged versions, fuller, sit better with roast chicken or fish baked with potatoes, where the dish has more substance.

Serving: 8-10 °C for young versions, in the band for fresh whites; 10-12 °C for oak-aged ones, the temperature the producer of Morgado de Sta. Catherina gives, within the band for structured or aged whites (10-14 °C). Bucelas sparkling goes at 6-8 °C, as the producer indicates, the band for young white sparkling wines.

CuriositàDid you know

In Portugal the name «Arinto» has travelled a long way, and not always on the same grape. The international catalogue of grapevine varieties lists more than fifteen different grapes under that name or names containing it: «Arinto do Dão» is actually Malvasia Fina, «Arinto da Terceira» is Verdelho, while Arinto dos Açores and Arinto do Interior are varieties in their own right. The Arinto of Bucelas, the one on this page, has its own number and its own synonyms: Pedernã in Vinho Verde, and Arinto d'Anadia, after a town in Bairrada.

There is an Italian link too. Since May 2023 Arinto has been listed in Italy's National Register of Grapevine Varieties, with a clone approved the same year: today its vines can be propagated in Italian nurseries as well.
