Caladoc

Francia · Montpellier, incrocio INRA del 1958France · Montpellier, INRA cross of 1958

Caladoc does not come from a farming tradition but from an experimental plot. INRA in Montpellier obtained it in 1958 by crossing Grenache with Cot, that is the Malbec of Cahors, and DNA analysis later confirmed that pair of parents. It has Grenache's Mediterranean character, but it does not suffer from coulure and bears looser bunches that resist rot better. In the glass it gives deeply coloured reds with a firm tannin, and fresh rosés when the grapes are pressed straight away. In France it was a curiosity of 64 hectares in 1988; thirty years later the vineyards exceeded five thousand.

Il carattereThe character

ColoreColour
Deep, dense ruby red: it is a grape very rich in colour. Pressed straight away, it gives pale rosés instead.
NasoNose
Frutta rossa e nera in primo piano. Red and black fruit to the fore. In the rosés the aromas stay more restrained; in some trial vintages in Provence notes of citrus and tropical fruit came through.
BoccaPalate
Full-bodied and tannic, with a supple tannin and no bitterness, which hardens, however, if the vineyard is overcropped; softer than Grenache at the same freshness, fairly warm.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Caladoc's home is the south of France. The French ampelographic register tracks its growth decade by decade: 64 hectares in 1988, 914 in 1998, 2,258 in 2008, 5,066 in 2018. INAO records it in the Aude, the Gard and the Hérault, that is in Languedoc, and in Provence, where in 2020 more than 200 hectares were counted in the Côtes de Provence area, planted above all around the Sainte-Victoire and in the Permian depression. In the same region the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation also admits it, as an accessory grape for reds and rosés within 10%. It also reaches the Rhône Valley, where Côtes du Rhône admits it among the accessory grapes; the Cairanne cru does not: there an estate with a plot of it bottles it as Vin de France.

Outside France it is listed in the official catalogues of Portugal and Bulgaria. In Portugal it is found in the Lisboa region, at Alenquer, where it goes into a blended red. In Lebanon at least two mountain estates use it: at Batroun, in the north, and at Zahlé, where one estate harvests it at 1,220 metres. In Morocco, near Meknès, it goes into a vin gris alongside Mourvèdre and Marselan.

This is where Caladoc's role has been officially assessed. Between 2016 and 2020 the Côtes de Provence growers' body tested it on plots spread across crystalline rock, clay-limestone and sedimentary soils, always next to a comparison Grenache. The result, examined by INAO in January 2021: in the vineyard it copes well with drought and rot, and at the end of the season it stays in water balance a week longer than Grenache, just when the harvest is decided. In the cellar, in blended rosés it adds roundness and a touch of freshness; in reds it adds colour, red and black fruit and roundness. In both cases the blends with Caladoc scored better overall than the comparison blends. The text of the specification approved by INAO's national committee in 2023 lists it among the accessory grapes for reds and rosés, within 10% of the vineyard: a supporting grape, not a leading one.

The Côtes du Rhône growers' body reports very good results in this version: pressed straight away, without a long stay on the skins, it gives pale, fresh, balanced rosés. It is also the path taken in Provence, where the rules require it to be blended with the appellation's main grapes. In the Camargue one estate bottles it on its own as a fuller-bodied rosé.
Rosso d'assemblaggioBlended red
In reds it nearly always works as part of a team. In France it adds colour and structure to southern blends; in Lebanon and Portugal it goes into blends with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional or Alicante Bouschet, sometimes with a short spell in oak. Rarer is the red in which Caladoc is the main grape, like the one from a Zahlé estate that takes it to 80% and ages it in steel only, or the single-variety Caladoc that a Cairanne estate ages in wood.

A tavolaAt the table

Producers' own sheets send it where you would expect a Mediterranean grape to go. The Portuguese house that puts it in its Reserva suggests grilled meat, stews and aged cheeses; the Lebanese estate at Zahlé suggests grills; the one in the Alpilles pairs its rosé with stuffed vine leaves and bouillabaisse.

When Caladoc gives colour and tannin to a red, the natural choice is meat that releases its juices: grilled lamb chops, a long-cooked beef stew with olives. The tannin dries the juices at every mouthful and the black fruit matches the smoky notes of the grill. You need a full-bodied red, supple and just tannic enough: a blend from the south of France, a Côtes du Rhône, a red from Lisboa.

The direct-press rosé works on a different level. With grilled fish or a plate of sardines the wine's freshness cleans the palate and readies it for the next bite. With a spread of mezze, hummus and vine leaves, it brings fruit without covering the herbs: a dry rosé from Provence works well, even when Caladoc makes up only a small part of it.

CuriositàDid you know

To tell Caladoc from Grenache in the vineyard, the Côtes du Rhône growers' body, in its guide to recognising grape varieties, points to one detail: the tendrils. Caladoc's are as a rule bifurcated, splitting in two, while Grenache's are mostly trifurcated. Another clue is on the berries: small dots appear on the bloom, which the French ampelographic record lists among the grape's identifying features.

A typical, recurring varietal profile of Caladoc, not the tasting of a single vintage or label: styles and versions vary from winery to winery. Origin, plantings and the grape's traits come from the French ampelographic register and the international variety catalogue; the appellation rules from INAO documents.
