Until 2009 it was simply called “Prosecco”; today its name is Glera, and “Prosecco” has become the name of the denomination it protects. It is the grape behind Prosecco's sparkling wines: light, fragrant, made for sharing. Today its heartland is the Treviso hills, and it is grown across much of the North-East, from the Veneto to Friuli.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Glera has its heart in the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the province of Treviso, where steep slopes and morainic, sandstone-marl soils give the finest wines. From here cultivation spread to the Treviso and Venice plains and, eastward, to Friuli-Venezia Giulia: article 3 of the Prosecco DOC specification lists nine provinces, Belluno, Gorizia, Padua, Pordenone, Treviso, Trieste, Udine, Venice and Vicenza. It prefers temperate climates, good ventilation and not-too-fertile soils, which preserve its acidity and aromatics.
It is on the steep hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene that Glera shines. On the steepest slopes — the rive, the individual hillsides named on the label — the harvest is done by hand: for the “Rive” grapes the specification requires it, and the gradients are steep enough to have inspired the image of “heroic viticulture”. At the summit lies Cartizze, a small hillside amphitheatre above Valdobbiadene: it is not a denomination of its own, but the “Superiore di Cartizze” wording the specification reserves for sparkling wines from that sub-zone. In 2019 these hills entered the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape.

Sparkling Glera is a wine you happily open from the aperitif onwards: its effervescence and lively acidity refresh the palate and call for the next sip. A Brut or an Extra Dry pairs well with fried fish and battered vegetables, accompanies sushi and seafood starters, and sits well with cured meats and fresh cheeses. The softer versions, up to Cartizze Dry, close the meal with dry pastries and fruit.
On temperature, our serving guide sets the scale: 6-8 °C for young white sparkling wines made by the Martinotti-Charmat method, the band for sparkling Glera in every dosage, from Brut to Dry. It is also the temperature two Valdobbiadene houses, Nino Franco and Col Vetoraz, give on their own datasheets.

The name “Prosecco” comes, according to the most accepted interpretation, from the village of the same name on the Karst plateau just outside Trieste. For a long time it referred to both the grape and the wine: in 2009, with the creation of the denominations, the variety was officially renamed Glera — an old local synonym — so that “Prosecco” could be protected as a name tied to the territory rather than to the grape alone. In the Colli Euganei the same grape has long been grown under the name Serprino.
