Lagrein

A native red of Alto Adige, at home in the Bolzano basin and the old village of Gries.

Lagrein is one of the great reds of Alto Adige, at home in Bolzano: a dense, almost impenetrable colour, aromas of blackberry and violet, and a robust tannin that time and oak soften into velvet. A mountain red that unites the warmth of the valley floor and the freshness of alpine nights.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Lagrein loves warmth and deep soils. Its heartland is the Bolzano basin — the Gries quarter, the Bozner Leiten slopes, the plain towards Ora — where the gravelly, sandy alluvial fans of the Talvera and Isarco store the day's heat, while the cool nights coming down from the mountains keep acidity alive. It is also grown in nearby Trentino, along the Adige plain, and in marginal amounts outside Italy. It belongs to a thoroughly alpine family: DNA analysis shows it to be a natural cross of Schiava Gentile and Teroldego and a half-sibling of Marzemino; and through Teroldego — sibling of Dureza, a parent of Syrah — it is a distant cousin of Rhône Syrah.

Alto Adige Lagrein di Gries
Alto Adige

It is at Gries, the old village now a quarter of Bolzano, that Lagrein reaches its peak. The warm, gravelly, deep soils at the foot of the town give wines of deep colour, full body and noble tannin; the Alto Adige DOC regulations allow the label «Lagrein di Gries» — Grieser Lagrein in German — for Lagrein from vineyards in the municipality of Bolzano. The Riserva versions, aged at least two years, show how far it can go: structure, chocolate, spice and a long life in bottle.

Lagrein Dunkel (Scuro)Lagrein Dunkel (Scuro)
The classic red, still and full-bodied. Today shorter macerations and time in oak — large casks for the traditional style, barrique for the modern bottlings — tame the once-rough tannin.
Lagrein Kretzer (Rosato)Lagrein Kretzer (Rosato)
The traditional rosé, from brief skin contact. The name comes from the «Kretze», the wicker basket once used to filter the must off the skins: bright colour, crisp fruit, a fresh palate.
RiservaRiserva
At least two years of ageing, as the regulations require. Polished tannin, long-ageing potential, notes of chocolate and spice.

A tavolaAt the table

Lagrein was made for the mountain cooking of Alto Adige. Its body and tannin stand up to braised shank, goulash and game; its lively acidity cleans the palate after speck and smoked cured meats, and it accompanies dressed canederli dumplings and aged mountain cheeses.

CuriositàDid you know

For centuries «Lagrein» also denoted a white grape, common around medieval Bolzano; today the name belongs to the red alone. The most accepted reading ties the name to the Val Lagarina in Trentino, where the grape has long been at home. And its tradition at Gries is kept by a Benedictine abbey, Muri-Gries, which vinifies Lagrein within the monastery walls.
