From the green heart of the Sannio, the hill country inland of Benevento, comes the white that turned Sannio wine around: Falanghina del Sannio is citrus, white flowers and a lively acidity that makes you fill the glass again. It is born from Falanghina, an ancient grape of the area, and it is a straightforward white to drink cool, within everyone's reach in its current-vintage versions.

In colour it is straw yellow, clear and bright. On the nose it is fairly intense, fine, floral and fruity: citrus (citron, grapefruit), white peach and apple, over a base of broom and hawthorn, with a hint of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it is dry, fresh and balanced, with good savouriness and a medium body; the finish is clean and fairly persistent, with a citrus return. In its current-vintage versions it asks for no waiting: it is at its best young, when the freshness is at its peak.

Falanghina is an ancient Campanian grape, but it is in the Sannio, the province of Benevento, that it found its most recognisable voice. The appellation covers the whole province, and the specification describes it as hill country between 200 and 650 metres, on soils where calcium carbonate is almost always present: limestone and dolomite, sandstone, brick-red, green and grey clays, and over almost everything the Quaternary pyroclastic deposits. Rainfall is around 1,000 millimetres a year on the valley floors and reaches 1,400 at the highest points, where winters are colder and summers moderately warm.

Four subzones may appear on the label: Guardia Sanframondi (or Guardiolo), Sant'Agata dei Goti, Solopaca and Taburno. The last gathers the villages at the foot of the massif, from Torrecuso to Foglianise and Montesarchio, and Cantina del Taburno declares vineyards there between 200 and 600 metres, on clay and calcareous marl.

The grape's revival is recent, and the specification itself tells it. In the 1970s the province of Benevento had planted mostly Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasias and Sangiovese, in a viticulture geared to quantity. In those same years Leonardo Mustilli, at Sant'Agata dei Goti, rediscovered Falanghina, then little known and little grown, and vinified it on its own for the first time: the success of that wine broke the habit of blending and pushed the Sannio to make single-variety wines from its other local grapes as well. From there the course was reversed, and Falanghina, Coda di Volpe, Greco, Aglianico and Piedirosso are today the prevailing grapes of the appellation area. As for the name, the specification reports the most common theory, «falanga», the wooden stake the vine was tied to, but calls it unproven.

The change shows in the vineyard too: the raggiera pergola, which with wide spacing and many buds per vine gave abundant yields, has largely given way to vertical trellising, with Guyot and spurred cordon and up to six thousand vines per hectare. And behind it lies cooperation. After the war, when farmers became owners of the land as well, the province's first enopolio, a public wine store, opened at Solopaca; over the years came the four growers' cellars still at work (La Guardiense, the Cantina sociale di Solopaca, the Cantina del Taburno and CECAS) to collect, process and sell the grapes of small producers. Alongside them work families tending a few hectares: together they have made Falanghina del Sannio an everyday, reliable wine, a white that puts on no airs and honestly mirrors its hills.

A tavolaAt the table

Freshness and savouriness make it a versatile table white: it gets on well with fish and fried food, because its acidity cuts through the fat and refreshes the palate, and it also works with the fresh dairy of its own land. It suits mixed fried small fish and spaghetti with clams, fried salt cod and, above all, Campanian buffalo mozzarella, whose creaminess is brightened by its acidity. The selections aged on the lees, fuller in body, go with white meat and medium-aged cheeses, and a traditional-method Falanghina carries fried dishes from the antipasto onwards.

An honest, immediate white: a sunny scent, a fresh, balanced sip and a savouriness that stretches the finish. Falanghina del Sannio is one of the most direct ways to have Campania in your glass. In its current-vintage versions it is a reliable table companion, to open cool and drink young; the selections aged on the lees can also take a few years in bottle.
